The results of new research conducted by Inmatica in collaboration with the University of Salento‘s Department of Innovation Engineering have been officially approved for publication by IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. The paper will be formally presented in June at the 10th international conference SpliTech 2025, in Croatia, one of Europe’s leading ICT and emerging technologies events.
A.I. and wearable devices for energy expenditure
The research introduces TransEE, an innovative Transformer model designed to accurately estimate Energy Expenditure (EE) during walking and running activities, taking into account both personal characteristics of the individual (age, body weight, etc.) and contextual data such as speed and type of activity performed. The model uses sequential readings from inertial sensors worn on the wrist and thigh, demonstrating that the combination of these two collection points significantly improves estimation accuracy. TransEE has been shown to outperform models based on CNN+LSTM neural networks and other Transformer-oriented approaches. Thanks to the integration with wearable devices connected via IoT, the system lends itself to real-time use both in clinical settings and in monitoring daily fitness activities.
Technology at the service of performance and prevention
This solution opens up new perspectives in the field of athletic training and health, allowing an objective and personalised assessment of energy expenditure. The ability to monitor workloads in real time can contribute to the prevention of overtraining, the improvement of rehabilitation protocols and the optimisation of training programmes. The work represents a step forward towards intelligent and integrated fitness, based on advanced technologies that can be adapted to individual needs.
Further recognition for Inmatica in the development of innovative solutions
The forthcoming publication by IEEE represents a highly prestigious milestone for Inmatica, reinforcing the central role of ‘industry-university’ synergy in the digital transformation of sport and health. Inmatica expresses great satisfaction with the result achieved and confirms its commitment to the promotion of new intelligent and sustainable solutions with great social impact.
